2015 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain: First Section

nationals

Last weekend the band embarked on another exciting journey to the National Finals in Cheltenham, just 12 months after claiming 3rd place in the Second Section. After a successful start to our debut year in the First Section, with a competent placing at Butlins and a fantastic 2nd place in the L&SC Areas, the band were looking forward to taking Kenneth Hesketh’s exciting and challenging test piece ‘The Alchymist’s Journal’ all the way to Cheltenham.

With an action packed fortnight of rehearsals ending with a night in Swindon, the band were drawn to play 10th in a line-up of 17 strong and experienced bands from across the UK. Despite one or two nerves on stage, the band gave what it felt to be a solid performance of this work. We were disappointed with our 15th place but encouraged by the audience reaction and by the varying brass band press who, while not tipping us for the very top end of the results mentioned the quality of the interpretation and ensemble playing. We’re looking forward to working on music for our late October concert in Fulham, and soon it will be Christmas and then Butlins!

Fulham Brass Band are looking for committed Percussionists to join our ambitious and friendly band. We are 5 minutes walk from the London Underground network and rehearse on Monday evenings. Please contact enquiries@fulhambrassband.co.uk if you think this is you!

New signings for Fulham Brass Band!

Fulham Brass Band are delighted to introduce 3 new players into our ranks, and strengthen the team before our forthcoming visit to the National Finals in September. Being based in London has meant that we have always welcomed players from around the world and our new members hail from as far afield as Scotland, Denmark and even Australia!

Stephen Wood (Eb Bass)

Stephen (Woody) recently joined the bass section on Eb and has played tuba in a variety of locations over his musical career including Warringah Concert Brass, Sydney Australia, ( l5 years) and Greenhall Band. Based in Gorebridge, Edinburgh he competed in the Scottish National Championships held during March 2000 at Walker Halls, Troon. A somewhat different musical occupation was playing in the Petit Orchestra D’Lest (Geneva Switzerland) where he was Tuba in a woodwind and string orchestra which focused on Eastern European orchestrations. He was also part of a Quartet of Tubas that took first place in the Open Quartet in the 2003 NSW State Championships in Sydney. Stephen’s profession is a Geologist with an oil exploration company. He spends his time attempting to encourage more students to study this interesting and vital profession.

Kim Jensen (Front Row Cornet)

Kim started on the tenor horn at age 10 but soon moved on to the trumpet. Since then he has played in many ensembles ranging from quintets and symphony orchestra to big bands and a salsa band. But always ends up back in brass bands! In his native Denmark he played for many years with Lyngby-Taarbaek brass band. During his student years in Manchester he played mostly with the Dobcross Silver band and is now proud to join Fulham band in London.

Grant Jarvie (Soprano Cornet)

Grant Jarvie started playing soprano cornet aged 8, and has continued ever since. Previously a member of City Of Discovery Band in Dundee, Grant is a well-known performer and soloist in Scotland, and regularly appears as a guest player for various bands at all levels, as well as contributing to various CD and TV appearances. After moving to London, Grant is proud to hold the soprano cornet seat at Fulham Brass Band.
